Zoey

He leaned over and whispered in her ear, "If you're ready to go, it's OK."
She looked up at him to let him know she understood.

Then she lay down and went to sleep.

First I learn that I share a birthday with Bush, then Zoey dies. Not one of my better birthdays.

Sorry to hear of Zoey's passing. She was a good dog and will surely be missed. Hope she went peacefully.

If this makes you feel any better, she actually died on the 4th. So there's only one tragic occurrence on the 5th that you have to live with.

And yes, she went peacefully. Dylan was with her and he was the one who told her it was OK to go...she just went to sleep and never woke up.

She's buried at his other grandfather's house (ironically, he's a man we refer to as 'The Old Dog').

These pics were taken on May 7, which was her 14th birthday and, if I'm not mistaken, is also Karl's birthday (and if I AM mistaken, then it's the 9th and you can give me shit for it later. The reason Eric's birthday is so easy to remember is because it's the day after a major holiday--even poo-flinging MONKEYS could remember that!!)

Anyway, we've all been really feeling the loss--she was a wonderful, smart, loyal animal and it was heartbreaking to see her health deteriorate over this past year. And even though we all knew it was just a matter of time, her death still came as a jolt--far too soon, far too sudden. Loss is something you can never really ever be prepared for.

It's never a good time to lose a pet, but it was a good life, and we should all go so peacefully, surrounded by people who make sure we aren't feeling any pain, and won't be forgotten.

If Eric's day was the same as Zoey's, if anything, it helps to take some of the impact off the day, it will be a memorial an celebration on the same day. No day should be a complete black hole on the calendar , and we should all always work to make sure none of them are for everyone near to us.

And if you mention poo-flinging monkeys too much you may spark the ire of Lorelei, who is very protective and fond of our fecal-flingin' friends.

And that is the dog who wanted to play fetch that day with me, but was too fast, and could snatch up the tug-toy faster than I could.

In the short time I knew him, he was better than I in most ways that matter.
