Laura - love the work..such a diverse set...the four framed paintings/sketches(?) had a 'sorren' look to them when I first looked...and the little clothes peg/skittle lady is sweet..what does it say under the 'diablo'?

Y'know, I had to look up 'skittle' to figure out which one you meant!!

And 'sorren', too. I wasn't familiar with his work, but it sounds like the rest of the world is--his characters remind me of the baby in 'Eraserhead' ("Oh...you ARE sick!!").

As far as the diablo, the piece has the words 'Evil B Gone' on top of it and underneath it says 'Run Devil Run'. I love those pieces--the guy who does them, Bryan Cunningham, also does banners for sideshows--really cool stuff.

are you an artist deidre?

Gosh no Laura...anyone artistic I have ever known (or read about)seems to breathe a different air to the rest of us ... I am far too ordinary, and I don't mean that in a self deprecating way...the world needs ordinary too....but I am incredibly jealous of anyone who has a passion for something..whatever form that something takes....and for some reason I always hear Lori Anderson singing Oh superman when I think of you!

O Superman. O judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad.
O Superman. O judge. O Mom and Dad. Mom and Dad.
Hi. I'm not home right now. But if you want to leave a
message, just start talking at the sound of the tone.
Hello? This is your Mother. Are you there? Are you
coming home?
Hello? Is anybody home? Well, you don't know me,
but I know you.
And I've got a message to give to you.
Here come the planes.
So you better get ready. Ready to go. You can come
as you are, but pay as you go. Pay as you go.

And I said: OK. Who is this really? And the voice said:
This is the hand, the hand that takes. This is the
hand, the hand that takes.
This is the hand, the hand that takes.
Here come the planes.
They're American planes. Made in America.
Smoking or non-smoking?
And the voice said: Neither snow nor rain nor gloom
of night shall stay these couriers from the swift
completion of their appointed rounds.

'Cause when love is gone, there's always justice.
And when justice is gone, there's always force.
And when force is gone, there's always Mom. Hi Mom!

So hold me, Mom, in your long arms. So hold me,
Mom, in your long arms.
In your automatic arms. Your electronic arms.
In your arms.
So hold me, Mom, in your long arms.
Your petrochemical arms. Your military arms.
In your electronic arm

Deidre, that is a very nice compliment because I LOVE that song and Laurie Anderson is such a genius at what she does.

But I am very curious about WHY it reminds you of me...is there a particular part (and don't say the 'Hi...I'm not home right now...' part cuz you can't make that kind of judgement until after you meet me 8^P)

My dad goes to the betting shop (do you have those in America?) every day....and lots of times when I look at the list of runners (horses)I see the winning name....go figure...and when I read your comments or look at your photos I hear Laurie Anderson (I knew I had mis-spelt it last night but was tired)....so much is in that song..strength, love, and a sort of 'ignore the fear and be calm'.. its how I hear your voice..
Please dont think I'm strange!!

And also the obvious similarities...artist, american voice, female, strong personality, interesting work, passion, and I imagine a steely determination...

Two posts because I left the computer to make me and my daughter some marmite toast..it's cold today...

I have to go look things up every time you post (which isn't a bad thing--it's an education!) Today's word: marmite.

As far as betting shops and runners--I probably would've figured that out, but thanks for clarifying. Yes we have places called (OTB) Off Track Betting--I know they have them in New York. Do they have them here in Illinois? Anyone??

It's a beautifully cool morning here. I may go canoeing with my son later. And then we are going to my parents' house so I can make a garland for my mom's head--we are going to a Renaissance fair tomorrow and she wants to look like a country maiden. Me? I'll probably go as a mud-groveling wench. Yeah...that sounds about right 8^P. But for now, I think some toast with peanut butter on it sounds good--you've inspired me Deirdre (although from the description of Marmite in Wikipedia, I'm not sure I could stomach that--what does it taste like?)
